Microsuction for Associate Audiologists/Practitioners and their mentors
This is a one-day course in Microsuction specifically for Associate Audiologists, Healthcare Assistants, Associate Practitioners who will perform microsuction on a regular basis. Many Practices prefer their staff to suction as an alternative to irrigation.
Nurses and Audiologists can already access a Microsuction Study Day specifically for registered professionals on Band 5 and above.
This course is for Associate Practitioners, with the same structure as the HCA irrigation and instrumentation course - students attend the full day, mentors just the morning.
Suitable for:
- Healthcare Assistants/Associate Practitioners working in general practice and the community
- Associate Audiologists and other support workers, including pharmacists, working in a variety of environments
all of whom will be performing microsuction on a regular basis in order to maintain their skills
The course provides knowledge and practical guidance which, together with mentorship in situ, should enable support workers to fulfil their extended role.
Please be aware that students should make sure that they are insured to perform microsuction at their place of work before carrying out the procedure.
Learning Outcomes:
- An understanding of the
basic anatomy and physiology of the ear
- An understanding of basic
ear care
- A foundation of knowledge on
which to base practical ear microsuction including otoscopy
- Reflected on accountability
and documentation
- An understanding that,
during and following completion of the course, they will undertake ear microsuction
within appropriately delegated, monitored and supervised conditions and
within the limits of their knowledge, skill and competence
- An understanding that,
following the course, ear microsuction will continue to be undertaken in
accordance with the Ear Care Guidelines
Following the course, the
student will require practical supervision by a suitable mentor who has received
training in ear care. The mentor must be identified, and approved, prior to
commencement of the course and must attend the morning of this study day.
